In the UK, all species of bat and the places they roost are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act and the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations. It is a criminal offence to deliberately kill, injure or disturb bats, or to damage, destroy or block access to a roost — even if the bats aren’t currently present, because the roost itself is protected. This is why you cannot simply have bats removed from a roof; doing so without a licence is illegal.
